Ambrozine Heron, 77, and Paulette Chambers, 49, jailed for 13 years.

Ambrozine Heron, 77, and Paulette Chambers, 49, were stopped by customs officers at Dover in March after travelling from France. A search of Heron's adapted Nissan Pathfinder uncovered 16kg of uncut cocaine stashed in carrier bags on the back seat, hidden inside tins of palm oil.Sentencing the pair at Canterbury crown court, the judge, Adele Williams, described Heron - who has diabetes, asthma and hypertension - as a "willing participant" in the crime."I have no doubt that your role in the car was to add some respectability to the journey in respect of your age and your ill health," the judge said. The court heard that the pair, from Smethwick, near Birmingham, were likely to have smuggled drugs into the UK on several other occasions, as they had made the same or similar journey 14 times in the six months before their arrest. Financial checks revealed that £90,000 in cash had been put in Chambers' bank account since their first trip.Quentin Hunt, prosecuting, said Chambers, a mother of three, told customs officers they had been visiting relatives in France when they were stopped at about 11.30am on March 21."In fact they had gone to Amsterdam, or near Amsterdam, and it was clear that that was where the drugs were collected from," Hunt said. "For the majority of the trips they had been going through France, through Belgium, and into Holland, and returning the next day or soon after."Defence lawyers for the mother and daughter asked the judge to take into account their ages and previous good character, as well as Heron's ill health.
Williams said: "The sympathy of the court cannot be engaged in that way. Those who import class A drugs into the United Kingdom commit a very serious offence. Cocaine is a dangerous and pernicious drug capable of causing havoc in people's lives."
Edmund Anderson, who was driving the vehicle when the two women were stopped, was acquitted of any involvement. Chambers admitted the crime and Heron was found guilty by a jury.

Jan Uzdowski has been jailed for 19 years after being found guilty of smuggling cocaine to the value of £8.8 million into Dover port.

Jan Uzdowski, 45 has denied all knowledge of the drugs in his truck which were a staggering 70.79kg of pure cocaine. They were hidden in his refrigerated trailer and discovered by customs services. According to the prosecutor the drugs were hidden underneath the floor of the traier and had not been detected when the lorry had passed through French and German customs inspections.Uzdowski claimed that he was transporting onions and had discovered a telephone that had been left on his battery. When checked it was discovered that there had been several messages sent to the telephone asking about the lorries location. Uzdowski claims that he simply replied to the messages but did not question who had sent them.

Sotiris Christos Andreas has been jailed for 14-and-a-half years

Sotiris Christos Andreas, of The Ridgeway, Enfield, was caught when customs officers searched his car in Dover last September.They discovered 20 kilos of cocaine in a false floor which ran the length of the vehicle.Over 14 kilos of the cocaine were 100 per cent pure and the entire haul had a street value of £800,000 which would have increased significantly when cut by drug dealers.
Mr Andreas, who turned 50 two days before he was sentenced on Friday at Canterbury Crown Court, denied the charge of being knowingly concerned in the fraudulent evasion of the prohibition on importing a class A drug.Also convicted was Cypriot national Pavlos Petrou Andronicou, 61, who lived in St Ann's Road, Edmonton, before being sent to Belmarsh Prison where he is serving two and a half years for importing cannabis.He also denied the charge and received a 19-year sentence after being found guilty.

Found 32kg of cocaine and £6,000 from the rear quarter panels of Mark Bunton's car

Mark Bunton, 52, from Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire was stopped by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) officers at Dover on June 14 last year. He was driving a Vauxhall Astra car when he arrived on the ferry at the Eastern Docks and claimed that he had been to France to look for a property. Officers recovered about 32kg of cocaine and £6,000 from the rear quarter panels of Bunton's car. Tom Hunnisett HMRC's Acting Head of Criminal Investigation for the South East said: "Revenue & Customs is working alongside the newly - formed UK Border Agency at the forefront of the fight to stop drugs entering the UK and to reduce the associated harm to our communities. We aim to protect society from this activity wherever we detect it and will not hesitate to pursue those involved so that they can be effectively prosecuted by the Revenue and Customs Prosecutions Office.
