A closer look into how addiction hijacks the brain

A closer look into how addiction hijacks the brain: "New research has provided some more answers into how substance abuse hijacks neuronal circuits involved in reward and motivation and causes profound and persistent changes in behaviour.

A special issue now provides new insight into to the most recent advances in addiction research and highlights the complexities associated with the neurobiological and societal impacts of addiction, as well as strategies for the prevention and treatment of substance abuse.

The issue contains articles from leaders in the field of addiction research that shed light on genetic vulnerability to addiction, the impact of addictive drugs on neuronal transmission, the effects of addictive drugs on reward, risk and decision making, behavioural and pharmacological treatments for addiction and reward mechanisms in obesity.

It also contains societal-focused articles that highlight issues associated with the use of opiates to treat chronic pain, the abuse of cognitive enhancing drugs and why a medical approach is likely to be far more effective at treating addicts than a punitive criminal approach.

'Substance abuse disorders profoundly affect our society,' writes Dr. Nora Volkow, Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse."

Experts warn of lives lost to drink

Experts warn of lives lost to drink: "Health experts have accused the Government of pandering to the drinks industry as they revealed up to 250,000 extra lives could be lost in the next 20 years unless tough restrictions are introduced.
Three leading experts, including Professor Sir Ian Gilmore, past president of the Royal College of Physicians, called for urgent action and warned that current Government plans, which include banning the sale of alcohol below cost price and increasing duty on high-strength beer, were 'inconsequential'.
The liver death rate in the UK is 11.4 per 100,000 people, more than double that of the other countries with similar drinking cultures and genetic backgrounds, such as Australia, Holland, New Zealand, Norway and Sweden."

British drinking is among world's highest - Telegraph

British drinking is among world's highest - Telegraph: "The average Briton drinks more than 13 litres of pure alcohol a year, higher than the European average and equivalent to nearly 500 pints of beer, according to figures from the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Cirrhosis Liver Specimen Photographic Poster Print, 18x24Beer accounts for 43 per cent of the alcohol drunk, with 30 per cent wine and 21 per cent spirits. The report also shows that deaths from liver cirrhosis have risen in recent years, and that one in 15 men in the country is an alcoholic.
It warns: “Alcohol consumption is the world’s third largest risk factor for disease and disability; in middle-income countries, it is the greatest risk.
“Alcohol is a causal factor in 60 types of diseases and injuries and a component cause in 200 others. Almost four per cent of all deaths worldwide are attributed to alcohol, greater than deaths caused by HIV/Aids, violence or tuberculosis. Alcohol is also associated with many serious social issues, including violence, child neglect and abuse, and absenteeism in the workplace.”
The WHO recommends that all countries implement tough policies on drinking to improve public health and reduce the costs associated with treating alcohol-related disease. It said analysis has shown that raising alcohol tax decreases drinking levels, including among problem drinkers and young people."
